Hobart is the capital of Tasmania, and a city that has charm by the bucket load, and a richer heritage than you would expect. It is also the place from which any tour of Tasmania must begin.
Sprawled around the Derwent River Estuary at the foot of Mount Wellington, Hobart is home to less than fifty thousand people, yet has all the facilities of a much larger city - without losing its small town identity.
With great hotels available, many high quality cultural museums, good value shopping and a cracking nightlife, there would seem to be no reason to leave the city until you remember just how naturally beautiful and scenic the rest of Tasmania is.
Offering unique wildlife and plants that are found nowhere else in the world, as well as gorgeous scenery that changes character throughout the year, Tasmania is a dream for touring. There is enough to keep you going for months - especially in the fascinating Freycinet National Park, and if you visit during the summer, there are great beaches on which you can sunbathe.
Renting a car in Tasmania is an absolute must, and makes a trip to the island much more interesting - as well as opening up the island to you and allowing you to see much more of it than you would on an organised tour.
