Darwin is closer to Singapore and Jakarta than it is to Sydney and Canberra. So it comes as no surprise to visitors that the city has a real Asian feel to it. The oriental culture pervades every aspect of local life, from Architecture to cuisine, and makes Darwin unique in Australia.
Darwin lies on the north coast of Australia, remote from the rest of the country in the sultry heat of the tropics. It is a city that offers plenty of great attractions for visitors to appreciate. Particularly notable are the beautiful weather in the dry season, and the stunning countryside that surrounds Darwin.
You can take time out to explore the famously beautiful yet oddly disconcerting expanses of outback in Arnhem Land, relax on a beach on the northern coast. Just about the only constant of a holiday based in Darwin is that you will be forever delighted by just how endlessly varied the area is.
Despite the many attractions in the area, including the gorgeous Kakadu National Park, and the coastline, it pays to spend a few days soaking up the unique culture of the city of Darwin, not least because of the opportunity that the city gives you to experience the hospitality of civilisation before leaving the present behind to pass into the mysterious dreamtime landscapes of the Aborigines homeland.
