Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, and a huge number of beautiful coastal resorts, Cairns is one of the most popular cities for tourism in all of Australia, and a great place to begin your holiday in northern Queensland.
Whether you are planning a holiday lying on a beach in one of the many small seaside towns such as the idyllic Palm Cove, or the laid back town of Port Douglas, or looking for action in Cairns itself, there is a holiday to suit every pace somewhere in the tropical north.
One of the main reasons for arriving in Cairns is the chance to take a trip out to the Great Barrier Reef, and there are a number of ways you can do this, cruise ships regularly ply their trade along the coast; there are even helicopter trips that take you out to the reef to see it from the air; but the best way to experience the beauty of this unique environment is by taking to the water and snorkelling or Scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef. Most hotels in the area will happily arrange a PADI diving course for guests, and there are few more beautiful places to learn.
Inland from the famous coastline, there are just as many attractions to thrill you during your stay, from jungle trekking through to white water rafting - the only limit to what you can do in and around Cairns is your own imagination!
