Day 1: Alice Springs - Kings Canyon
Distance: about 3 hours
This Self Drive tour takes in some off road driving and requires a 4WD vehicle to appreciate it safely. When driving in the outback, make sure you keep the car topped up with fuel regularly and carry plenty of water at all times. After arrival in Alice Springs, pick up your 4WD and head north along the Stuart Highway to the Finke River and Palm Valley. Here you will see ancient palm trees around a sparking desert oasis. You'll need to have a permit (arrange it locally) to head onto the Mereenie Loop Road to Kings Canyon, which is in the Watarraka National Park.
Hotel: Kings Canyon Resort
Day 2: Kings Canyon - Ayers Rock
Distance: about 3.5 hours

Day 3: Ayers Rock - Alice Springs
Distance: about 5 hours
Get up really, early to see the spectacle of the sunrise over Ayers rock, and then spend the rest of the morning taking one of the many tours - or even climb the rock if you feel energetic, before getting back in your car and heading for Alice Springs, where you can check into your hotel for a last night in the city.
